It's natural! We know he doesn't use gel because whenever he loses his hair band, it falls loose. So when it's up, he looks like a pineapple, and when it's down, it's straight. I have no idea how it works, but it looks cool, and that's enough for me. Plus, it makes for a nice dramatic effect in battle, which is when he most seem to see him with his hair down :3
