i. [ western ]

They called him The Earl, a play on the riches he apparently thought were his right. Stagecoach drivers up and down the western corridor lived in fear of his gang springing up from God knows where, shooting the passengers, and making off with their valuables.

"Get out," he said with a jerk of his head, grinning that insane grin. "I've got business with your father-- war buddies, you know-- and a pretty little thing like you shouldn't see what I'll do to the likes of him."

Anyone who knew the family would have been shocked at how demurely Nena exited the coach. But his relation with the General-- honorable discharge after the war of 1812, ear shot clean off, you know-- went too far back for him to know his children.

"Now, 'General', seems like you and I have got--"

He didn't get any farther.

Nena lowered the flintlock pistol she'd pulled from her garter and pouted a little at the blood on the front of her dress. "Pa, you'd best make good on that promise I could get a new dress once we make it to Salt Lake!"
