It was a low blow. Wesker would feel more disgusted with himself for it if there were easier ways to get to her, but such tactics were the second-best way to get a rise out of Landy, and thus worth trying. Genuine threats to those she concerned herself with worked better, but those were best used sparingly.

She could have answered that she had her friends, or some other such nonsense, but it was clear what he had meant, and she didn't bother to misunderstand. He always had to appreciate that about her. She shrugged. “It doesn't matter.”

A raised eyebrow joined his smirk. “You really believe that?” Most humans were much too pathetic to.

She gave him one of those looks, the one that hinted at anger, determination, and perhaps a touch of despair behind her annoyance. Looks like that would probably have been crushing had he been a weaker man. “I have bigger things to believe in than romance,” she said, and her tone made it impossible for even him to doubt her.

He supposed they had that conviction in common. Not that sharing had any significance.
