Canonically, we never get to know her real name since as a vampire she's already 400 years old and she's been known as "Darla" for so long she forgot what it was like to not be Darla. When she was human, she was a prostitute. I think poverty forced her to be one, since she's young and beautiful and she thought she could use her assets to get herself out of her state in life, but contracting syphilis changed all that.

I'd like to think she was greedy as human, tough as nails and no nonsense. She didn't believe in god, only in herself. She hated how powerless she was as a human - and then suddenly, The Master came and changed all that when he turned her into a vampire.
