Karakael waited patiently.
She sighed. "It was made up of dreams. Over and over again, I had dreams of losing the ones closest to me. Before then, I hadn't even had ones close to me; I suppose that I could handle it if one of you disappeared, but to be constantly left behind and never see any of you alive again..." She looked over at him with the beginnings of tears in her eyes. "You can't leave me."
He wanted to comfort her, but. "You know that I can't promise that."
"I don't care." Suddenly, she was clinging to his shirt. "Don't. Don't go. I order you not to die and let me stay here alone."
"Everyone dies." Karakael stroked her hair. "Everyone leaves, and there is nothing that can be done."
"I don't care," she repeated. "If you go, no one will speak honestly to me any longer or tell me of the strange beauty of their worlds. Please... don't leave me here."
His mask was still smiling, although it didn't match his expression. "Not just yet, little angel."
