Holy crap.
He denied knowing who they belonged to when the girls who admired him asked, of course. There was no reason to get into humiliation that he didn't need to get into, and it wasn't as if anyone at school knew his underwear choices except for Sakura. Sakura would have had to be an idiot to say something, and she kept quiet, as expected.
He was absolutely going to get revenge for this.
He did research and confirmed his initial suspicions. Kaito was one of the few people with a definite reason to be angry with him, and he had a natural tendency towards pranks. It was almost certainly his fault. The question was how to get even.
Embarrassing him with Issei's 'phone call' had led to more protectiveness and caused the Incident in the first place. Attacking him seemed like an overreaction - he was neither a girl spurning him nor an enemy who just had to die, so that wasn't the right answer.
Shinji resorted to fish.
After watching the video post with Kaito waking up to a trout hanging directly in front of his face and screaming, Shinji couldn't resist the urge to gloat. Seeing Kaito's flustered, distinctly unamused expression was worth finding a fish that was in the perfect state of recently deceased.
There was a war, after that. Kaito continually attempted to get the better of him, and Shinji did the same. It never broke into violence, although after his bow was tampered with and he was made to look stupid in front of the whole archery club, Shinji seriously considered it. Out of the goodness of his heart, he refrained.
The next time he considered violence was when Kaito called him up and told him flat-out that he'd talked to Rider when he sent her over to carry out his pranks.
Shinji tried not to storm off to find his Servant then and there. "Yeah, Rider's my Servant. Why does that matter?"
"No reason~ We just talked about a lot of things, like how you've sent her to do every single one of your pranks for you," Kaito replied casually. "Isn't that a bit like cheating?"
"Making up rules for something that doesn't have them isn't a smart idea," Shinji answered, rolling his eyes.
"Yeah, I know. But it doesn't really prove anything if you just tell someone to go do something. I thought you actually could get out there and work on it, but it turns out all you can do is give orders." Kaito sighed. "That's pretty sad."
Shinji grit his teeth before snapping, "Some of us have more important things to do than learn how to steal someone's underwear, Kuroba."
"Like inheriting the Matou family name?"
"Exactly."
"Issei told me that you weren't even a mage, though, so doesn't that make you-"
"Shut up." Shinji could feel the bile at the back of his throat, and he really just wanted to hurt something at that moment. He didn't think he cared what. "You don't know anything about the Matou or being a magus or my world, so don't even try to tell me what that makes me...!"
There was a silence at the other end of the line for a few moments. Kaito's voice, when it returned, was quieter. "Can't be a mage and a teenager at the same time, huh."
The anger died down. "No," Shinji answered weakly, "you can't."
"I figured." Kaito sounded like he was smiling. "If you can do your next prank by yourself - no Servants, no Medusa, just you - then we'll talk some more. If you can't, there's no point in still doing this. Okay?"
He'd trained to be a magus almost since birth. If he wasn't a magus, wasn't the heir, he was nothing. Being a Master in the War made him a magus - he couldn't do magecraft, but he could at least command a Servant. There was no reason for him to go out of his way to be anything else, because everything else he did didn't mean anything-
Shinji found himself smiling very slightly. "I can do that."
