Thereby Hangs a Tail
Shinji smiled, tickling the puppy's pink belly. "Yeah. I found her the other day." He turned his face up. "She needs a home."
Winry squatted down to pet the puppy. "Don't tell me you called me here to take a puppy, Shinji!" He made big eyes at her. Winry could feel herself giving in, even though she didn't want to. "I have a dog!" And Naoto had...six? Seven? She couldn't even remember how many puppies Naoto had been given at Christmas.
"Please, Winry? I can't keep her." He mumbled something that sounded like, "The penguin doesn't like her," then raised his voice again. "She needs a good home, and I know you live in the country. Maybe someone there needs a puppy?"
The puppy scrambled to its feet and kowtowed to Winry, barking at her and wagging her tail. She wasn't a sheepdog, then again, neither was Den. And Den is old, she told herself, even though she didn't like to think it. Maybe a puppy wouldn't be such a bad idea, one Den could raise up, train to be a good dog.
"All right, Shinji," she sighed, "I'll take the puppy. But this one! If you find another, you'll have to find someone else to take it."
His smile grew. "You won't regret it, Winry! She's almost house trained, and she's really smart. I know you'll take good care of her, too."
"We will. Ed and Al could use a puppy, too." She ruffled Shinji's hair, grinning at his expression. "It'll be good for all of us, something little we can take care of." Picking up the puppy, Winry settled it in her lap. "We'll give you a good home, little girl."
"Perfect," Shinji said, smiling in relief. "What about a kitten? Do you know someone who'd like a kitten?"
Winry groaned loud enough to make the puppy bark. "Yes, but no more animals! No - no rats, or bugs, or birds! Nothing else!"
Shinji's grin worried her, but he didn't offer any other pets.
Thank goodness.
