Issei thought of himself as a good person. He thought of himself as someone with a sense of self-worth, besides that. He thought of himself as many things. Before he was anything else, however, before he was a monk or a diligent student or even Ryudo Issei, he was a loyal and devoted friend.
It was just his nature to put those he cared for above himself. His happiness was staying with them and seeing that they smiled. And if they couldn't smile, he would still stay beside them. It was never a conscious choice of his to do so.
