# Song: "The Will of One (http://lyrics.wikia.com/The_Protomen:The_Will_Of_One)" by The Protomen.
# Note: takes place in the same contemporary AU as this (http://adddictions.livejournal.com/254770.html?thread=63840050#t63840050).

"Please do not panic," crackled the radio. It was tapping into the frequency the city's PA system used. That's what he said before he set out his laptop and turned his back to her. His calm smile...

She couldn't smile calmly. Roze looked down at her clasped hands, at the cellphone with no reception.

"You're welcome to the coffee machine," he said while the radio was talking about evacuation. She could use the warmth -- she was in her winter coat and still felt cold. But she was worried about something else.

"Where are we?"

"It doesn't say?"

"The GPS isn't working..." He continued typing. "The GPS," she repeated, swallowing her anxiety, "It isn't working." He seemed to squint in puzzlement at her over a shoulder, his glasses sitting on his head.

"Naturally not... Remember, we're in an underground shelter." He began turning around. "Relax. Everything will be over soon."

She couldn't sit there doing nothing, yet what else could she do?
___
The concrete halls were deserted. The mud and slush they tracked in were broken by newer tracks. Others came this way.
___
This was part of the inferno they escaped. It was the singed remains of a shopping mall. The rafters opened into the night sky, where skyscrapers loomed.

Footsteps came up behind her. "Roze?"

"It's gone. What are we going to do?" She clutched at the shopping bags she brought along. There were people she wanted to give these. Were they alright? Distant gunfire. Will she ever see them again?

"I think the better question is: what are you going to do?" She could see him rest a hand on the railing. "As for myself... I'm going back for a cup of coffee."

"There has to be something..." He shook his head.

Rather lightly, he said, "You heard the radio. It's just us left." He checked the time. "It'll be over soon." He beckoned at her before going down. She took one more look around.

The sound of him dialling on his cellphone reminded her to check the reception. Still nothing. "As I thought," he murmured. The PA system came online then, telling them everyone was safe.

# Decided to make them secondary characters in this one.

N-Never mind. I'll remember to include him in the next one. (Still owe you a couple from the AU meme.)

This was good, I really really enjoyed it! You're quickly becoming one of my favorite fic writers.
