Why you should watch/read/play:
So you know that shonen where there are massive training arcs before any fight and it's all about getting more power? This isn't that shonen.
You know that shonen where the male lead is constantly rescuing the female lead? This isn't that shonen.
You know that shonen where it just takes a character one arc to get over their issues? This isn't that shonen.
You know that shonen where the characters all seek revenge when someone dies but their grief is ignored outside of that? This isn't that shonen.
This is Kekkaishi. This is where the ability to use your skills well matters more than raw power. This is where the male lead gets his butt saved by the female lead in the first chapter (and afterwards). This is where characters sometimes take one step forward and two steps back in addressing their issues. This is where characters happen to remember and are saddened by a death a hundred chapters after it happens. This is where the politics of the organization dealing with the supernatural is just as important and as fascinating as fighting the supernatural.
This is also where the hero proposes to make his familiar be in the shape of a monstrous cake and a spirit drives a school to universally adopt weird hairstyles.

Why you should watch/read/play: Cause it's awesome.
It's a very well rounded anime. It's funny but it also deals with very deep themes. If you prefer idealism, you might not like it but if you like it when the hero has to work for his reward and sometimes even that isn't enough to get everything you want, you'll like this.

Medium: Movie! A comic book movie(s) no less. It's basically cheating if you want to play some cool characters and not try to sort through 30+ years worth of canon.
Characters wanted: ANYONE. I'd really love a Matt Murdock most of all for obvious reasons. Stick or Abby Miller would be also super awesome too.
Why you should watch/read/play: Basically it's a huge guilty pleasure. These were made back in the day before Batman Begins or even Spider-Man 2 were around to set the bar high. Even so Daredevil does its best to pay homage to the original work. Panels from the comic are very faithfully adapted into this movie while still making it clear this is its own universe. The characters are a little different from their 616 counterparts but, I feel mostly in a good way.
I highly recommend if you watch both the Director's Cut and the mainstream version of Daredevil though for the full story. Spoilers: there's an entire story with Coolio in it that explains a lot of important plot points.

Medium: Manga (also an anime we pretend does not exist and light novels that give a better idea of the political system the Trinity Blood world has)
Characters wanted: EVERYONE. Abel Nightroad, Cain Knightlord, or Seth Nightlord would be so wonderful though.
Why you should watch/read/play: The manga has beautiful art, hilarious jokes, and a really engaging story. It's about a world that's basically been broken through a lot of bad decisions and people who are stepping up to try to salvage things. Their ways of doing so are what makes everything so cool. Some people want to kill out entire races, others want co-existence, or even to just burn away the entire world and start over. The best part is everyone in this canon (except Hugue) is fascinating. These are real people all working toward the same goal in the end. You will fall in love with their stories if you give it a chance.
Also it has vampires and Sailor Moon references.

Why you should watch/read/play: It has an interesting story that isn't quite what it appears to be at first, likeable and well-rounded characters, beautiful environments and gorgeous background music. Hello, RPers. What can you play when you play from Final Fantasy VI? Close your eyes and I'll tell you.
Can you imagine it? The hilarity of playing a thief who keeps a dead chick in his basement out of guilt and loneliness? I do. Surprise! You're a demi-human with memory and emotion issues who discovers family with the help of her friends and a pregnant teenager.
THE WORLD ENDING turns your world upside-down and I hope you like paintings, because there's a ten year old tsundere loli who paints everything and kicks ass waiting for someone to play her. Why you should watch/read/play: Okay, so you have Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue hedgehog that's the fastest thing alive battling a fat egg-shaped bad guy named Dr. Eggman trying to take over the world (of course!). If that's not enough, the games themselves are fast, lots of platforming goodness, and additing. Even the less good ones have charms to them (except for Free Riders, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic R. Those are the bad ones and not even "so bad it's good" kind of way.)

Why you should watch/read/play: Tepper is a marvelous author of Social Commentary. Her works are accessable, interesting, and always leave the reader with something to think about, whether you agree with her point or not. The Visitor in particular is easy to get a hold of, has an interesting take on a post-apocalyptic world, and some absolutely chilling villains.

Why you should watch/read/play: Two brothers have a large extended road trip across America saving people and hunting things

- an old surly drunk who is quite possibly the most badass person in the show and calls everyone an idgit while filling his beer with holy water and building panic rooms on his free weekends;
- a sassy gay demon who's good enough to get an angel to make a deal with him;
- a badass gun-toting barwoman and her equally badass but very human daughter;
- two more demon ladies who are sneaky and badass and just generally awesome;
- a whole metric ton of angels who are fascinating;
- other small-part characters who I am probably forgetting right now but who are all equally as awesome
also I am planning to take canon off the rails come next year so if you watch the canon and feel like apping anyone before then you too could be a part of this wacky adventure 8D
warning: supernatural is filled with a metric ton of angst and a lot of character death and it does have a fair share of other problems, especially as you head further into the last two seasons (6 and 7)! however if you are the sort of person who falls in love with characters rather than plots I would still suggest you give it a go, as there are some really fascinating characters in this show who deserve more love and exploration. c:

Medium: TV Show, a 2-part special/OVA (set after the first season), one side-story episode, one movie (after S1 and the special), and one backstory movie that explains a bit on Barago/KIBA (happens during S1, while Kaoru's kidnapped). Currently the show is sitting at one 25-episode season and up to 10-11 episodes of season 2, titled Makai Senki.
Characters wanted: Kouga, Kaoru, Tsubasa, Jabi, hell, even Leo/Reo (We're not 100% sure on the reading yet) with the new episodes delving into his personality/motives, but anyone would be great, really.
Kouga would be best if only so Rei could tease the hell out of his idkbff.Why you should watch/read/play: You guys know Devil May Cry, right?

Well, GARO can be considered the love child between these two franchises.
Now hear me out before you go clicking away, this works out better than you might think. So there's this whole underground society in Japan that works to fight against Horrors, which are essentially demons that feed off of humans by way of tapping into their negative emotions, possessing people (it's goddamn painful and irreversible, btw), etc etc. They aren't afraid to use sexuality in order to expose victims, either, just to warn you. This series is considered more mature due to this.
Anyway, so we have Makai Knights and Priests working together to take out Horrors, and this series mostly centers around one Saejima Kouga, current title-holder of Golden Knight GARO.
Later we meet m'boy Rei here, formerly known as Ginga and with his title being ZERO the Silver-Fanged Knight.
What's really great about this series is that not only are the fight scenes well-choreographed (and usually done with the actual actors, not stunt doubles), with awesome music and some pretty bamf special effects, but there's also character development. Kouga and Rei both go through some hefty changes throughout the series, and we get a good look into their pasts in order to understand why they are the way they are today and how they've changed.

I do recommend it for that, even if there are some plot points that are still not covered, though Makai Senki is helping to expose that. (For example I got my answer once and for all about Rei's stance on fighting - he actually loves fighting a tough opponent, but holds back because he knows that's not why he's fighting.)

If you wanted to check out Makai Senki, this guy on YouTube has the episodes uploaded, along with Beast of the Midnight Sun (Special) and Red Requiem (Movie).
