promisedknight: A bloodied Ren holding up his deck, the image washed out from lens flare (Patron saint of lost causes)

Ren knew that his social skills left a LOT to be desired, but this was awkward even for him. He managed to get the kid to stop hugging him, sent him off in the direction of his parents, and then found a mercifully empty place to transform back. It was just his luck that the community had dropped him in a world where Riders were considered superheroes.

That was a weird thought. From all he'd heard from Kaitou and Minato on the community, he could understand how some other Riders might be considered heroes, but those were special cases—Kaitou traveled to different worlds where sometimes Riders were heroes, and Minato was from so far in the future that he had an idealized view of the Riders before him. But he wasn't out to be a hero. He had a very specific goal, and he knew it meant he'd have to do some decidedly unheroic things to achieve that goal. But he'd committed himself to that because he knew it was the only way he could save Eri.

But still, weird as it was and as awkward as it was, it was still kind of nice having someone thank him for saving them. Even though he tried his hardest to pretend it wasn't. In a way, it almost felt like everything he was doing might be worth it in the end. And if things didn't have to be the way they did...

"Maybe next time," he said.
