To be perfectly honest, she didn't want to be a hero, per se. She just didn't want to be a villain.
But you can't just decide to be Good just so you can avoid being Bad--there's a lot more involved in being Good than that. You have to be a role model, you have to follow all sorts of rules, learn all kinds of lessons...
You have to sacrifice what you love, you have to get hurt, you have to harden your heart against the pain...
You have to open up
You have to stay closed
And maybe, just maybe, if you're determined to risk everything--your time, your heart, your pain, your secrets--maybe then you can be a hero.
And maybe it's what she wants after all.
2. Secrets
She knows all about secrets.
It's easy to keep your identity and everyone else's a secret when you know exactly how to tell half-truths to avoid people from suspecting why her mother was in prison, how bad things were with her father, why she knows how to fight the way she does, why Batman and Green Arrow cover for her.
She doesn't want anyone to know.
But at the same time, she can't wait until she can start being honest.
3. The Show Must Go On
[Five Years Later]
She's retired now. But when Dick calls her up, she grabs her bow and suits up, kissing Wally goodbye and knowing it'll be the last time she'll see him, whether things go right or wrong.
She's dead, officially at least, and Kaldur needs her to pose as his lieutenant and lover. She changes her costume, she wears a glamour charm, and nobody knows Tigress is Artemis. Even she can't see where one ends and the other begins.
She's dead again, or so she wants the Light to believe, and once they've pitted the Light and the Reach against each other, she gets back up and continues the fight. Wally kisses her and calls her Artemis, even if the mask she wears is still Tigress.
She's Artemis again and fighting against the Reach. Everything will be all right.
She's Artemis again and crying, and Wally is gone, and nothing will ever be right again.
She's Tigress now, putting distance between her identities because she can't wear the costume of Wally's lover if she's going to teach Bart. And the show must go on.
4. Reach For A Reach
[Five Years Later]
As a show of good faith, the Light tasted some of the Reach's soft drink before it went to market.
Artemis hated it. She hated mango with her strawberry.
The Reach created a peach flavor in response. Her little contribution to the invasion.
5. A Hard Day's Night
Even when she's been up all night chasing bad guys and studying for her history exam, the best way to relax is to visit the community for a couple of hours and chat with her friends. It's something she looks forward to every time she's got a hard day's night.
