⑥ FEELINGS     you have so many feelings you're just going to explode. it could be you're watching the lion king and you just can't take mufasa's death scene. maybe you're just overwhelmed in general, but bring on the tears!
⑦ VERGE     you're not crying. not quite, and not yet. but you've got all the tell-tale signs; tightness in your throat, burning eyes, and some tears might already be gathering. are you going to break, or can you hold back the flood?

[ Although others would think otherwise with how she continuously brushes against death-- in more ways than one-- she fears death, or rather the potential of it. Naomi fears another's death more than her own-- specifically when it should be within her power to save them. In all her years of operating, she's never lost one patient. But now? As she prepares for her next surgery, she looks over a chart with trembling hands, the coffee beside her now grown cold. She can't fail this patient, she tells herself. But the odds are against her greatly.

At first she doesn't notice him, but then-- ] ...Diarmuid...? What are you..?

[ It's then that she realizes her eyes are tearing. Normally she's much more composed. ] Ah... excuse me.

[Lancer took a seat beside her, and though there was obvious concern on his face he hesitated to speak for a moment.]

...Could I ask if something is bothering you?

Just a... [ She looks away for a moment, back to the papers. A finger taps on a sheet. Well, it would be easier to talk to someone. ] ...sometimes it's difficult, knowing that failure carries so much.

[ A nod. ] I have to stop thinking of the could-be's. The hypotheticals are almost... [ Crippling. ]

[ Another pause. ] ....He's only a child. [ Meaning the patient. ] And... what he's suffering from-- I had to do with the cause of it, many years ago, possibly before he was even born. Knowing that it's still around, doing this to people--

[ A hand goes to her mouth. She can't finish her sentence but without a sob. ]

But you are working to help people like him, aren't you?

[ She feels as if she really can't face him right now. ] ...What I do now-- to help against this factor--... it's all I live for, Diarmuid.

[ No, not even her child could compared to the responsibility she feels for undoing what she's done. And admitting that fact to him, she feels even worse. But it's the truth. ]
