① SADNESS your sorrow is so overwhelming that it has driven you to tears. it could be sadness about anything - a recent loss, a not-so-recent one. spurned love. maybe you're just depressed about life in general.
② ANGER sometimes you get so angry that you just can't hold it in. whether it's bottled-up rage, righteous indignation or plain old frustration, it is all bubbling over and some furious tears are happening.
③ FEAR terror can be pretty intense, and at its worst will lead to a breakdown. waking up in the middle of an awful nightmare - or feeling afraid of something much bigger. there are a lot of things to be scared of.
④ JOY tears of happiness come in a lot of different forms! when you scrape by something terrible and you're just so relieved; when something wonderful happens to you, or someone you love; when you laugh so hard you cry.
⑤ HURT physical, emotional, mental - it doesn't matter. the response to any sort of pain is, often, tears. the source could be anything; an injury, some harsh and cutting words that were said to you, even acute stress.
⑥ FEELINGS you have so many feelings you're just going to explode. it could be you're watching the lion king and you just can't take mufasa's death scene. maybe you're just overwhelmed in general, but bring on the tears!
⑦ VERGE you're not crying. not quite, and not yet. but you've got all the tell-tale signs; tightness in your throat, burning eyes, and some tears might already be gathering. are you going to break, or can you hold back the flood?
⑧ OTHER obligatory wild card option, for any combinations or other scenarios that weren't detailed here!

[Lancer took a seat beside her, and though there was obvious concern on his face he hesitated to speak for a moment.]
...Could I ask if something is bothering you?

[ No, not even her child could compared to the responsibility she feels for undoing what she's done. And admitting that fact to him, she feels even worse. But it's the truth. ]
