/SPAMS THIS COMM LIKE A SPAMMY THING

Deerrrrrp I keep thinking of questions to ask people. :'D

This time around, because I am a crazy languages freak, my question to you, good citizens of DDD, is... What languages do your characters speak/understand?

[identity profile] eats-typos.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Japan [livejournal.com profile] ariseintheeast very obviously speaks Japanese. I'm pretty sure he understands other languages (like Dutch, English, etc. etc.)

Hibari [livejournal.com profile] stfu_herbivore also speaks Japanese but he probably understands Italian (maybe not fluently though) and could recognize other tongues if he wasn't so...ignorant I guess?

[identity profile] stripping.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Issei speaks Japanese fluently, and has a high-school level of education in English; he does pretty well in that class, of course, as he's a good student.

[identity profile] last5secondswin.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Suguru speaks Japanese, which in the language of his home planet as well for some reason. But, due to his crazy instincts and intuition, he's actually pretty good at picking up language on the fly. Couple of days in America, he speaks English.

Kuroro... All of them? It seems the sort of thing he'd learn.

TL;DR B|

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Eris: Greek, obviously, death languages (she killed some of them, I'm sure) and pretty much al the languages in the world. Because chaos knows no limits.

Tatsumi: Japanese and English, but I'm sure that he knows more languages than that because of his job.

Hakuba: English, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Portuguese and he's learning Russian.

Aoko: Japanese and English.

ELphaba...I really have no idea. B|

Nancy: American English and French, 'cause french is romantic <3

Spain...........Pfff. First I thought that the nations would speak all the languages, but in one strip Antonio is trying to teach Romano how to speak spanish so..no. That said, he speaks all the languages of the different regions Spain, those are:

* Basque in parts of the Basque Country and Navarre. Basque is the only non Romance language in mainland Spain.

* Catalan in Catalonia, adjacent eastern Aragon, and the Balearic Islands and, as a distinct variant, Valencian in the Valencian Community.

* Galician in Galicia and adjacent western parts of Asturias and Castilla y León.

* Aranese in the Pyrenean comarca of the Aran Valley, in north-western Catalonia. It is a variety of Gascon, which in turn is a variety of the Occitan language.

Spanish is official throughout the country. He also speaks French, Italian, Portuguese, Latin, Egyptian Arabic, Turkish (orz) Brazilian, Greek (The actual queen is from Greece) Castellano from Argentina, Dutch and German (he loves to talk with Belgium and Roderich :3), Hungarian, Romani...he traveled around the world, he know a lot of them :|

Klavier is the only character I have that's capable of speaking more than one language, to my knowledge. He speaks English, German, and he knows enough of the made up language of Borginia to pass muster.

[identity profile] lovesnotwisely.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuu speaks Japanese, English, French, German and Chinese (though she's better at reading than speaking in that last one) fluently. She's pretty good at Spanish and Latin, and is learning Italian and Russian. :|;;;; Fucking over-achiever.

Simon speaks Gurren-Lagannese (http://onceasomebody.livejournal.com/852.html), which is something like that except more fish-shaped symbols are involved and some triangles. No, I'm not joking.

As does Viral as there's one language in GL, it looks like.

Page and Ken both just speak Japanese, though the first also speaks a little bit of Engrish which is amazing to watch because he's so terrible at it.

I've actually wondered this a lot about the G00 characters. Because they come from all over the world, do they all speak one language when they're together, and if so, what? \o_O/

Aside from that, Setsuna knows Japanese - he's probably not completely fluent and there will be some things he doesn't understand, but he knows enough to get by.

suuuure~

V is never seen speaking anything but English, and given the whole 'no memories' thing, I suspect that's all he speaks. But he's mysterious that way.

Dumbledore speaks English, German, French, Mermish, Gobledegook (yes, that's canon) and probably a bunch of other weird wizarding languages :P.

Italy speaks Italian and English for sure, probably also German and Latin (from living with Austria/the Roman Empire, respectively). Some regions have co-official languages, so he also speaks: French, Ladin, Slovene, and Sardinian.

[identity profile] land-of-the-sun.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't V listened to french music? I think that in the comic book V has German books too, but maybe I'm confused. I read it ..4 years ago :/

Birkin knows English and... English. Although he knows enough about Japanese suffixes to annoy Adachi. And because LOLSCIENCE, he knows his fair share of Latin. Maybe not enough to speak to the Pope, but enough to make Elata proud.

Krauser knows English, Spanish (or at least picked some up from Saddler and crew), possibly some German (comrade, much?), and maybe Russian (from spending too long with some of the Umbrella guys).

Dojima knows Japanese and a bit of English.

[identity profile] visestvita.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Now imagining Krauser all, "DA, COMRADE" at everything. Maybe. That's just me though.

[identity profile] hippie-hacker.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Langly only speaks English and has no real desire to learn other languages.
Touya on the the other hand speaks Japanese, English, and is quick on learning other languages.

[identity profile] visestvita.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wesker, uh, same as Birkin on the Latin though I imagine him actually knowing some French at least. And German, enough to get him by when he goes gallivanting across other countries to fuck their shit up. if only because oh my god wesker speaking french/german would be so hot

Agnus speaks English of course, and knows Latin, ancient Greek, ancient Hebrew I'd say and many other old languages, which he needs for studying old texts on demonology and such.

Aizen speaks Japanese and English and he's so badass he doesn't need other languages.

Adachi speaks Japanese and a bit of English. Of course DDD doesn't care so we al just.. bullshit our way through that, don't we?

[identity profile] touchofgenius.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Sol is fluent in Japanese, English, and French, and knows some German and Latin. His bounty hunting jobs and the sheer fact that he's lived for over 150 years are his reason for this. He's a smart guy, as much as he tries to hide it.

Leon...idek, man. I'd assume he knows some Spanish, especially after the whole incident with Saddler and friends (...you know I'm right. He was curious to what they were yelling at him. 8D;;;), ...and that's about it. He might learn some more if he ever gets the opportunity to learn it.

Sheva is fluent in English, Spanish, and some different African languages. Problem is that I don't know which one specifically, I'll have to look it up.

Rock is fluent in English, and knows some Japanese thanks to Andy (Terry's brother) and Mai. Probably some Korean from hanging around Jae Hoon and Dong Hwan, too.

Firion...just knows English, or whatever common language is on his world. He's seen no reason to learn any new languages, however, he might start looking at Japanese from hanging around with Hikaru.

[identity profile] butlerfromhell.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sebastian can speak, like, everything I guess. English, definitely, because Kuroshitsuji takes place in England, but it's likely he can speak pretty much every language ever, being a demon and all.

Yoruichi speaks Japanese and probably English and... that's probably it.

Wolfwood speaks whatever the hell it is they speak on Gunsmoke and that's it.

[identity profile] suitoflegend.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Barney speaks Chinese, Korean, and apparently a little Hungarian, in addition to English. A few snippets of French, too.

Russia speaks Russian. And English. He probably knows most of the Baltic languages, too, if only to make the Baltic nations stop speaking them, and enough of the languages in the future G8 to spy on them effectively.

Ema speaks French and English!

Rose probably knows all the languages of Endiness, since being as old as she is and how often she traveled it wouldn't surprise me if she took the time to learn them out of boredom. She can pick up languages pretty easily when she needs too.

Sari speaks English, and probably knows a little bit of French and Spanish, but she is by far not fluent in them. She can also read the Cybertronian written language. If she really needed to speak another language she can probably download it into her processor but since she never had the need to do that she has never tried.

I imagine Hector knows quite a few languages considering the part of the world he lives in and probably received a decent education when he lived in Dracula's Castle. Romanian, German, Serbian and Romani are probably the ones he uses quite often. He probably understands Latin, Greek, and English, but must likely hardly ever uses them.

[identity profile] jagan-glare.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ban is multilingual due to being on the run since he was a kid; chances are if it exists, he can at least understand it. That said, he speaks German, English, Japanese, French, picking up his Greek again, Dutch, Spanish, some Latin, etc. And he has never spent a day in formal school. O HAI ISSEI 8D

Hwoarang speaks Korean and English, though he's probably picked up bits of Japanese, Chinese, and Portguese from being in the Iron Fist tournaments. Not enough to really get past a basic greeting (or curse words) but still!

Nabooru, as well as being fluent in the Hylian and Gerudo tongues (duh), also speaks English. She'd begun learning other languages from the community, but then life got in the way.

Rena speaks Japanese and English. That's it so far.

Vincent only speaks English. Or whatever language it is in FF7's Gaia.

Tom knows what certain languages sound like(German, Spanish, French the easy ones), but English is the only thing he can speaks. xD

Hannibal speaks Italian, German, French, Spanish, and can read and write Greek, and Latin. He can speak Latin too, and probably more but that's about it I think. xD

Haruto is Japanese and some English. ^-^

[identity profile] cleaver-bitch.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)

Naoto's native language is Japanese, obviously, but he is also fluent in English, as well, both written and spoken. And not just at a high school level, either. English was often spoken in their home, especially when his Grampa's friends from the US and his father's friends from Britain would come to visit, so Naoto is used to listening to the language. He can speak it without too much of an accent, and understands a lot of the slang and idioms, as well.

He knows just enough French to order in a French restaurant. That's about the extent of Naoto's language skills.

A fun fact: When visiting people in real life, Naoto speaks English by default, unless he knows for a fact that the person he's with is Japanese (or at least understands Japanese).

Neil speaks English. :'D Like Lyle, he knows a little bit of Irish. His knowledge of French is at the level of 'hello, my name is Neil, what is yours, where is the bathroom?' level from doing it at school and forgetting most of it. He's picked up the odd phrase in other languages (...mostly swearwords/insults/etc) but essentially, it's English or bust. :'D

[identity profile] nonesodangerous.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally assume that the characters in 00 speak some kind of Global English, because news tickertape, Veda reports, emails, webpages, posters and generally everything, regardless of the source country, is in English.

additionally the lingua franca for air communications is English (hence I HAVE CONTROL), and considering most of the battle in 00 is in flying mobile suits, then English would be the logical choice. :|9

OF COURSE, to make things a little more interesting, it's also fair to assume that each country still retains its own languages.

Tieria can speak quite a few of them: English, obviously, German, Dutch, grammatically-incorrect-due-to-overpoliteness-Japanese, and both Classical and Vedic Sanskrit. Due to the Sanskrit, he could probably make a decent hash at other Indo-European languages. He's obscenely quick to learn other languages too, but hasn't really bothered so far because it would just take up space in his mind that could be used for more important things.

If you ever wanted to examine the coding he uses for programming, you'd notice it's heavily written in complex Computational Sanskrit.

Regene is much the same, except he has no use for Dutch. He has, however, dabbled in French for shits and giggles. Both Tieria and Regene's accents are curiously unplaceable. They generally reflect where they are and who they're talking to.

Shiro speaks Japanese, English, the neutral and gutter-class demon languages, and Cat. He knows a few high-class demonic phrases, mostly used for spell casting, and knows enough blood runes to teleport.

Reverie speaks Japanese, and English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese to a level of tourist conversation. Essentially, what you'd expect from your usual range of tour information.

Rider's first language was Greek, but when she was summoned into Japan, she could suddenly speak fluent Japanese (albeit with a bit of an accent). Currently she's trying to pick up some German as well.

Akabane knows Japanese, but he seems like the type of guy who would pick up other languages as well, so I'm thinking that he'd know English, Chinese, Korean, among others.

Mion and Shion only know Japanese, maybe some English if it was taught at school.

Yuffie......that's a good question. She'd only know the official language spoken on Gaia, which can either be Japanese, English, or some completely made-up language.

[identity profile] debitumnaturae.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Death: all of them.

Togusa: Japanese and English, definitely. The computer displays in the series are always a mix of Japanese and English. He probably also has enough Russian and Chinese of one of the major dialects to get by, if not to have deep philosophical discussions.

The series has that "it's too much work to hire foreign voice actors and subtitle" problem, so everyone in the world apparently speaks fluent Japanese, including American army corporals and random British thugs. XD

I doubt being polyglot means as much in SAC as it does in the real world, because they have real-time perfect machine translation for telecommunications, and if you want to speak a language you don't know, you can just get the files uploaded to your cyberbrain.

Itsuki speaks Japanese, and a decent amount of English thanks to school. He can get by, but his accent's not great, so if it weren't for the comm translating he would probably sound very silly.

Tamaki speaks French and Japanese fluently; his mother is french but his father is Japanese, and he was exposed to both languages from an early age. He speaks a fair amount of English, too. But in everyday life he sticks to Japanese, except when he's talking to people like Ema who speak French.

Rise speaks... Japanese. :'D

Nena... let's see. As Shiro said English is the lingua franca of Gundam-world, so in general Nena'll be speaking that. She can also speak German (it provides a cover origin, look at their first names), Chinese Mandarin (because it's still a damn common language even then), and Sanskrit, both computational and everyday (lol Veda). She also picked up a few words of random languages thanks to the scientists overseeing the project; it's why she still uses the Japanese Miha-nii even though she's not japanese, she just thinks it makes her sound cute.
